Is Band a year-long elective?
YES! All band students should register for both “Instrumental Music: Band Fall” and “Instrumental Music: Band Spring” and Ms. Colburn will move you to the appropriate level course.
Can I take band and another elective?
YES! If you take band all year, all four years of high school and take all the courses you need to graduate, you still will have EIGHT remaining elective classes.
Can I play in the band and play sports?
YES! We have had a member of EVERY sports team – JV and Varsity – at some point in every band. With limited after-school rehearsal requirements, most band students are involved with many other activities – Sports, Language Clubs, National Honors Society, Brain Game, etc.
What options of band are open to freshman?
Rising Ninth Graders have THREE choices of bands at Leesville Road High School:
- The Intermediate Band is the instrumental ensemble that transitions students from a successful middle school musical experience. Most ninth-graders join this ensemble to continue their musical training (this is not a beginning band) with performances at school functions and public concerts. Intermediate Band has received Superior Ratings at the NCBA Music Performance Adjudication in Grade III and also elects to perform at another national festival. This is an ACADEMIC level course.
- The Concert Band is an audition-only ensemble for 9th-12th grade students. It is the mid-level ensemble at Leesville Road High School. This ensemble plays grade IV or V at NCBA Music Performance Adjudication. This Ensemble is FULL YEAR. Students may opt for ACADEMIC credit or HONORS credit with additional requirements.
- The Symphonic Band is Leesville’s premier audition-only band for learning advanced techniques and musical concepts. Merging music with movement, members will also perform as Leesville’s Marching Band at home football games, parades, and competitions. Every member must attend all performances, Band Camp in July, before school morning rehearsals, and weekly sectional rehearsals. This ensemble (both Symphonic and Marching) meets during fourth period. Few freshman are ready for this ensemble when they enter high school. The Symphonic Band has received Superior Ratings at the NCBA Music Performance Adjudication in Grade VI. This is an HONORS course.
- other opportunities such as Jazz Band, Pep Band, Winter Guard, Brass Ensembles and Woodwind Ensembles are available to students of the bands program.
Does band give honors credit?
- Intermediate Band is Academic level
- Concert Band can be registered as Academic or Honors Credit
- Symphonic Band is an Honors credit

Students will need to audition to be in the Concert or Symphonic Band. Auditions will be submitted by VIDEO in the Google Classroom – use code qltvdpq. These videos are due April 12th.
